Description Hachoir is a library written in Python which allows to see and edit a binary files (or any binary stream) field per field. A field is the most basic information: a number, a string of characters, a flag (yes/no), etc. Only supported formats can be opened, it's not a magic tool. It can be used to extract some informations (eg. metadatas), edit some fields of a file without original program, or convert a file from a format to another.

More than twenty formats are supported: network packets (ip, tcp, udp), EXT2/EXT3 file system, archive (zip, ar, bz2, …), executable (PE/ELF), etc. It's first a library, but a ncurses (text) interface to view file or extact meta-datas does also exist. The library works as a lazy parser: informations (field size, description, content) are read/created when needed.
