Not for newbies. Read twenty-five or so Internet tutorials and get the basics of assembly down before advancing to the material in this book.
First part of the book may be boring for advanced reversers. Calling conventions of functions, basics of disassemblers and debuggers.
The rest of the book is full of code examples providing usefull information on reconizing disassembled code written in high level languages. The book gives good examples of what disassembled code looks like for function pointers, direct calling, manual function calling, as well as the function prolog and epilog. Virtual functions, Inline functions and Inline Assembly are also covered.
Although a good read I use it more for reference. I would have liked to had a CD with the book and maybe a chapter own writing your own disassembler. And another chapter on IDA.

I think maybe *** out of five asterisks, that's what I give it.

if you are experienced enough in assembly programming in either windows or linux environments, have moderate experience using IDA Pro..then i wouldn't reccomend this book to you.

i wouldn't say its a beginners book, but if you are good enough at writing assembly already, look elsewhere.
