My turn!

Okay, my take on the next few years -- since that appears to be the blog theme of late ;)

Symantetc and McAfee are going to first and foremost be peering over their shoulder at a massive object called Microsoft once (well, if and when...) Vista is released for numerous reasons.  I actually more smell anti-trust litigation brewing than anything else as it would be somewhat within the realm of plausible for both of them to sue Microsoft and claim they have provided a means of thwarting their protection mechanisms.  True or not, it is a likely scenario.

As for Apple... Well, Apple is a "multimedia" company more than a software vendor persay.  This does not reduce the flap that could likely occur if they do not take heed of what may happen with regards to the vulnerabilities of their software.  Apple has never claimed to be a server company thus the impact would be much less pronounced and since Apple is more of a consumer company, the average consumer absolutely does not care about security.  Consumers have not yet and they will not suddenly start caring if Apple has a rash of vulnerabilities.

Actually, what I find most interesting about this entire debate would be if Apple is smart enough (and they are) to catch wind of it and start implementing changes to head off any possible problems.  Definitely not beyond the realm of the possible for this to occur.

Either way, two+ years in this industry is a lifetime, so ultimately if we throw enough stuff against the wall something will stick and hold true :)
