Forums >>  Brainstorms - General  >>  problem about an unpacked dll file, why it can't be unloaded?

Topic created on: April 11, 2008 01:53 CDT by kcynice .

I have a dll file, which is packed by unknown way.
I unpacked it manually. My steps were:

1.find OEP
2.dump its memory
3.change the dump file's Entry Point
4.fix the dump file's imports table

because the origional dll file has no relocations,i did nothing for this work. The unpacked dll shows "Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 DLL",all extra information shows "not packed". In addition,Iload it by IDA,or any other pe tools,no error occur.

My unpacked file has been uploaded here:

http://rapidshare.com/files/106767568/unpacked.dll.html

Anybody would like to tell me why?and any idea?
Thanks

When you pass a normal file at IDA and PeID, do you get lots of warnings about it being packed? Usually, the answer is no.

PeID goes to the entrypoint of the executable and checks for signatures there first.  The signature it found was one that matches "Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 DLL."

By unpacking and repairing the executable, you've essentially changed the packer code into "extra useless data that no tools care about."

As far as being unloaded, unloaded from what?

OK, thanks. And i get it now. Because the dump file, i really found the right OEP, but dumped it a little too later. I dumped it when the dll was being unloaded. So, i dump it when it first going to OEP. it goes well now.
