Topic created on: November 1, 2007 18:21 CDT by jimjones .

Hi All,
I'm writing a college paper about reverse engineering and I would like to know what books I should use to find the following topics:

1 - Reverse engineering (introduction)
2 - Decompiling programs: tools and techniques
3 - Resources editors, disc editors and memory editors

I only need the basics on each topic.

Thank you very much for your help!

Well, here goes:

Google.  Read here.  Do your own research.  That is the only way you are going to learn.  If we do the research for you,  you undermine your own education and you devalue anyone else's around you.  Heck, type Reverse Engineering into the search engine on Amazon.com and you will find a rather nice list.  Look in the Book Store on here and you will get a list of books.

Lastly, you're not likely to find books worth much on those topics in general.  Had you done some cursory initial research you would have found numerous comments on that specific subject.  The field of reverse engineering is fast moving at the least and moderately impossible to capture properly at best.

Do yourself a favor, learn on your own.  This is a college education you are paying for, you are devaluing your own investment before you even complete it.

Additionally, it would not be out of bounds for someone within your own college (TA, professor(s), etc) to search Google and find this posting.  I would not personally, specifically the way things like this are going today, dismiss that as a real scenario.

I don't mean to be trite but if you are writing a quick paper you can always use:

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Reverse_Engineering
http://www.acm.uiuc.edu/sigmil/RevEng/index.html

If you are looking for some examples of how reverse engineering is applied say for example Malware research here are some articles:

http://www.google.com/search?q=malware+reverse+filetype%3Apdf&btnG=Search
