Forums >>  IDA Pro  >>  How to create data structure which contains x86 instruction in it?

Topic created on: December 30, 2011 02:19 CST by Pinczakko .

Is it possible to create data structure which contains  instructions in IDA Pro? In this case the particular data structure contains a relative jump. I've tried several combinations, mostly playing with IDA Pro structure offset-type. But, none of the works. Google doesn't yield anything useful either.

It depends on how you're wanting to represent the instructions. Since assembly instructions are really just range from 1 to 8 byte long sequences of numbers called op codes, it should be natural to represent each instruction as a number. It might be best to make a structure called Instruction which contains an array of integers of MAX_INT size (let's say MAX_INT is 12 bytes to account for prefix instructions like rep) and then a second field to represent how many opcodes are actually used in this array. This probably isn't the most efficient approach, but it should be simple enough. Anyway I'm not sure what you're hoping to do with this structure, but what I've provided you with is one way of representing insturctions.

Hi, thanks prot0man. It's a good idea. Actually, I was working with BIOS structures which sometimes contain instruction in them. Last time I decided to split the structure into two (between the instruction part), because the instruction contains a jump into the real code.
