If you are referring to automobile diagnostic codes you are likely referring to the OBDI and OBDII standards. OBDII is found in pretty much all modern vehicles ('96 and beyond) and there are several programs and interfaces available to read the data.
If this is in fact what you are after I would check out:
Hopefully this helps a bit. Knowing the make and model of the automobile in question would help if you need further assistance. Car ECU RE is definitely an interesting excercise and one that IDA is certainly up to the task.
Thanks for the reply, but what they were asking about was in relation to reverse engineering/analyzing software code (They didn't specify source or binary). The were told by someone else that it was well worth the $8K that it costs.
I am somewhat suspect of this "Universal Code Reader" as all car ECUs are fundamentally different. There are certainly similarities within a given family of cars (Audi, BMW, etc) but beyond that each engine has a different range of inputs and outputs it requires to function properly.
If you find some information I would definitely be interested in thumbing through it as ECU hacking is a bit of a side interest of mine.
Either way, if you can dig up more information on this I would be interested. Anything with "universal" in the name just screams marketing to me and not reality.
