Topic created on: February 3, 2009 09:14 CST by huku .

Hello,

I'm relatively new to the subject of windows reverse engineering and before going further and studying more advanced topics, I'd like to learn more about the internals of the Windows heap memory management (bookkeeping structure layout, allocation & deallocation algorithms etc). Can someone propose a good book, an article, a tool, or ever a bunch of keywords that may assist me in googling? :-)

I've googled it a lot, but it seems that most resources out there seem to hide the low level details of the Windows heap implementation!

Thanx in advance

I would recommend advanced windows debugging.

Have a look at the sample chapter from the book:

Books from Mark Russinovich and David Solomon about Windows are pretty neat source of information. ;)

From an exploitation standpoint you can look at the papers by Sotirov, Falliere, and Anisimov. Otherwise I would also recommend the Advanced Windows Debugging book in combination with Windbg to examine the heap realtime. For some source see http://www.codeproject.com/KB/cpp/HeapWalker.aspx for an example heap walker.
